Sartirano Il Poeta Barolo DOCG 2016

**92 Points International Wine Challenge**

The Sartirano cellar was founded in 1871 and 150 years later is now in the hands of the fourth generation, Paolo. The San Silvestro winery is in Novello, in the heart of Barolo district. Here, Paolo and Guido Sartirano rule the business with wisdom and respect for the tradition and history of this company, they represent the fourth generation and want to be respectful towards the work their families did to be where they are today. With that in mind the investments made for the future keep a keen eye on the values they’ve learned from their ancestors: consistency, authenticity and innovation. Each glass embodies these three principles to return wines that reflect the uniqueness of this great area.

Paolo works closely with many growers to gain exceedingly high-quality grapes, one in particular is Señor Seghesia, who loves to describe Tuscan life and experience in poetry, hence the name of this wine. Il Poeta, from the magnificent 2016 vintage is a poetical expression of the finest Nebbiolo. Aged over 3 years in Slavonian oak barrels, the wine is complex, deeply flavoured and silky.

‘Italy’s most famous wine lives up to the hype after a spectacular, long 2016 growing season, perfect for the thin skinned, sometimes finicky Nebbiolo. These powerful wines combine elegance with firm structure, offering delicate notes of rose, herbs and red berry framed by liquorice and tobacco creating breathtaking tension.’ Wine Enthusiast

As soon as it hits the glass you can tell it is Nebbiolo with its distinctive translucent, brick-red colour. The second signal is the heady, compelling perfume that pours from the glass and offers up an olfactory powerhouse of violets, jasmine, wild rose and white spice, coupled with an intense red berry core. On the palate the wine is fresh, with amarelle cherry and raspberry assuming centre stage. But the support acts are numerous: woodsmoke, rose hip, white pepper, sous-bois, anise and hints of leather. The wine is still young so there is lurking tannic presence that ideally needs decanting to unwind and allow the wine to open. It is one of those wines that develops new flavours as you work your way through the glass. Beautiful. Its wild nature makes it an ideal match for game and truffle dishes, and all manner of mushroom. For a special treat serve with a leeks.
