Chateau Senejac Cru Bourgeois, 2015, Haut-Medoc

Critic Score: 16.5 Points Jancis Robinson

A great value Cru Bourgeois wine, especially in a great Bordeaux vintage like 2015. It’s a deep garnet wine. Well balanced with lots of red and black fruit and a touch of acidity and fine tannins on the finish.

Château Sénéjac is a Bordeaux wine estate in the Haut-Médoc region, making wines principally from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It was planted with vines as early as the 16th century, and in 1999, was bought by Lorraine Cordier of Château Talbot in Saint-Julien. On her death in 2011, both Sénéjac and Talbot passed to her sister, Nancy Bignon Cordier.

The vineyard is situated in one large plot on a plateau overlooking the commune of Le Pian. It covers 39 hectares (96 acres) of the 150-ha (370-acre) estate, and is planted with 48 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 37 percent Merlot, 11 percent Cabernet Franc and 4 percent Petit Verdot. The vines are now farmed biodynamically.

Fruit for the Sénéjac wines is harvested by hand and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wines are aged for 12-15 months in French oak barriques, around a third of which are new. Around 200,000 bottles of the grand vin are made each year, along with junior wines under the Artigues de Sénéjac and Comte de Sénéjac labels.
